DOJ creates anti-human trafficking task force

MANILA, Philippines – The Aquino government is stepping up the campaign against human trafficking.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima has signed an order that would create an anti-human trafficking task force which will be headed by Justice Undersecretary Jose Vicente Salazar.

De Lima said a conviction is necessary to address the worsening situation of human trafficking in the country.

She noted that the Philippines is listed under the Tier 2 watch list of the US State Department’s 2010 Trafficking in Persons report.

“So we’re stepping up,” De Lima said.

Jobless Filipinos are often vulnerable to trafficking, De Lima said.

She added that trafficking thrives because there is collusion between the traffickers and some government agencies.
